I’ve Got a Ring – Now What?

Getting engaged is one of the most exciting times in a person’s life! The first thing couples want to do is to share the good news with family and friends. A typical response to the big news is, “Oh my, this is so wonderful. Congratulations! When is the wedding?”

At this point, it’s probably time to set a date, or at least a general time frame – spring, summer, fall, etc. Many brides dream about where will the wedding be, what their dress will look like, who will be the wedding attendants, who to invite, where will we honeymoon, and more.  Wedding planning websites and magazines are filled with great ideas and using a wedding planning notebook will allow you to easily access your favorite ideas while planning the event budget.

A very important tip is set a budget early on and then stick to it. Wedding expenses can get way out of hand if you’re not careful. Who will pay for what elements? What do you both agree are the most important things to spend money on? You’ll need to decide if you’re going to hire a wedding planner, or if your mom, sibling or best friend(s) will help or take on the roles of planning, decorating and decision making.

Next, it's time to find and select your vendors. The first thing you’ll want to find is your venue. There are so many options from which to choose! A sandy beach by the lake; a rustic barn; a chic, industrial location; historic, elegant location; a traditional church; a local vineyard; or grandma and grandpa’s backyard can all be great venue choices.

Once you’ve set the event date and location, it’s on to find and secure the other vendors. Next up is photography. Many professional photographers are booking dates a year and sometimes two years in advance. Do your research – make sure your photographer is licensed and insured. They only have one shot at getting the perfect images, so be sure they have the experience and skills needed and are comfortable shooting photos in your chosen venue. You’ll also want to make sure that you love their style. If their package includes two photographers, even better!

Other vendors you’ll need to consider include, but are not limited to florist, caterer, baker, music, lighting, transportation, officiate, travel planner and more. Obtaining written contracts from each vendor (even if they are friends) will ensure the price, proper insurance coverage and other details are in line with both your expectation and budget.
